Next Meeting Reminder

Join us and bring a friend!
March 23rd
Time TBD

Welcome to the group!  If you were able to join us last night, I hope you were inspired and intrigued by what we can experience together as a group and also as individuals. If you weren't able to join us, we'll look forward to seeing you in the future.

While there were varied fitness levels and different personal goals, one thing we all have in common is the desire to make health & fitness a part of our lives and to connect with others with whom we can share wisdom, experience and camaraderie.

Some of the topics that were of interest last night, in terms of getting subject matter experts in to talk with us were; sports nutrition, how to prevent and deal with training injuries, swim technique, training plans (and how to figure out eBay! ;)

We're considering the next date for the March meeting and looking at March 23rd at GreenGourmetToGo. We'll have a speaker lined up, more on that once we finalize some details. A short distance group run-walk through St. Mary's is also being scheduled as part of our next meeting.

I want to thank you all for coming out in the cold, for reaching out to meet new people and for your willingness to try something new.  I hope we can make this a useful and valuable experience for everyone. Please feel free to contribute your suggestions and feedback so that we can make this as rewarding as possible for everyone.

What's in a Name?
question mark Calling Creative Minds...
One thing we did not discuss last night was a name for the group.  Currently, the name is very literal and by no means one that was meant to stick. besides, it should be fun, it should embody our purpose and be memorable! If anyone has any ideas, (I know some of you are noodling on this already...!) feel free to share them with me or with the group in person or on email.

If you don't know where you're going, you'll never get there...
Sometimes, having a goal is the best way to get inspired. We talked about some websites that contain information on road races and triathalons. The links are below - if you haven't visited these sites before, you might find it fun to pick a race that might seem a bit out of reach, use it as a training opportunity, and train for it.

3 Winter Running Secrets to Prepare for a Strong Spring (from Active.com)

Winter training isn't fun or easy. Everyone needs to run in the snow at least once a year, after that the fun and excitement diminish in favor of worry about falling and concern for missed workouts. But the winter is also a great time for a running rebirth, a chance to leave the hectic race schedule behind for some quality training that can really help separate you from the competition when the season heats up again in the spring. Here are three distinct things to work on that can help you breakthrough this winter.

Nutrition Tip

Re-fueling After a Workout
We all know that rehydrating after a workout is an important part of the recovery process.  If you are planning on a particularly heavy workout, a good rule of thumb is to weigh yourself before and after so that you have an idea of the fluid you should be replacing. It's common to lose between 1-3% of your weight in water during a workout/run.

Your goal should also be to refuel your body with a high carbohydrate food in the first 30 minutes after workout or race. Including protein with this snack also helps recovery.

Examples of great foods to choose for recovery include a fruit smoothie, trail mix (making a batch at home is a healthier and cheaper alternative to buying it pre-packaged in the store), a banana with a nut butter also works.  (At GreenGourmetToGo, we sell "Energy Bites" which contain a nut butter, dried fruit, coconut oil and a few other health-supportive ingredients.)

It's east to lose that first 30 minutes talking with friends, showering & dressing or driving to your next destination.  By planning ahead, you'll be prepared and will help your body recover faster so that your next workout is enhanced.

Looking forward to seeing everyone again on March 23rd - stay tuned for more details!

Sincerely,
